ARTIST:
Mimi Herbert
TITLE:
White Fold with Twist
DESCRIPTION: T:
Formed acrylic
17" x 17" 13 1/4 "
ABOUT THE SCULPTOR:
Mimi Herbert has lived, worked, and studied as an artist and writer in India , Pakistan, Haiti, Brazil, El Salvador, Indonesia, and New Zealand.
Her sculpture, prints, and drawings are in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery, the National Museum of American History, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the American University, and private collections in the U. S. and abroad.
"Flag imagery has been important throughout my career. The Bicentennial Banner that I created for the facade of the Corcoran Gallery of Art was kept in place for a year at the request of the White House.
I am fascinated by the creativity and ideas of mathematicians. My Fibonacci sculptures and prints reflect this interest.
Light and shadow also are important. Shadows cast by folding or piercing the acrylic material change with the time of day or the intensity of artificial light with which the piece is lit and extend the sculpture."
Mimi Herbert is the author of "Voices of the Puppet Masters: The Wayang Golek Theater of Indonesia", University of Hawai'i Press, 2002. Her drawings appear in the book.
